Lakewood Schools Get 'C' On State Report Card

LAKEWOOD, OH — The Lakewood City Schools got an overall grade of "C" on the controversial state report cards released this week. The district's performance was nearly identical to its 2018 grades.

“The State Report Card is one measure that we at Lakewood City Schools use to track the success of our students and the programming we provide. We are most pleased with our accelerated growth in Gap Closing and overall progress scores for all students. Accelerating student growth and achievement is always our goal," said Superintendent Michael Barnes.

The state report cards grade districts, and individual schools, in six categories and then issue and overall grade. Here's how Lakewood performed on the 2019 state report card:

• Achievement: C
• Progress: B
• Gap Closing: B
• Graduation Rate: C
• Improving At-risk Readers: C
• Preparation for Success: D

"This Report Card indicates we are moving in the right direction. In addition, with our Vision of a Lakewood Graduate creating deeper learning opportunities for our students, we expect to continue to see improvements across the system," Barnes added.

Those grades are identical to the district's performance in 2018.

State officials said performances on the report cards improved statewide.

"This year's report cards show continuous improvement is ongoing and that, across Ohio, we are getting better and better at challenging, preparing and empowering each child," said Paolo DeMaria, superintendent of public instruction.

A spokesperson for Lakewood City Schools said the district was still preparing its response to the state report cards.
