📰 News we're reading

1. Lakewood plan to cut elementary schools from 7 to 6 sparks debate (cleveland.com) — Lakewood City Schools is weighing a controversial plan to cut neighborhood elementary schools from seven to six, repurposing Lincoln Elementary as a centralized early learning center and redrawing attendance boundaries. Supporters cite efficiency and $600,000 in first-year savings, while many Lakewood parents fear longer walks, transportation gaps, and impacts on neighborhood identity and home values ahead of a key Sept. 8 board vote.

2. Teen Arrested for Setting Historic Cleveland Church Fire (firehouse.com) — A 19-year-old Lakewood man has been charged with arson after investigators say he and others set a fire inside a vacant historic Cleveland church, causing extensive damage. Authorities allege the group was "urban exploring" when they used combustibles to start the blaze, which drew dozens of firefighters and destroyed much of the 1894 structure with deep civil rights ties.

3. Sicksense announce 2026 North American tour (nextmosh.com) — Metal band Sicksense is bringing its 2026 North American tour to The Foundry in Lakewood on November 22, giving local fans an early chance to hear songs from their new EP, "Funerals." The tour mixes headlining shows and support slots with acts like Mushroomhead, Fear Factory, and Eyes Set To Kill.

4. FAA says it never considered closing Burke Lakefront Airport, contradicting Moreno: Capitol Letter (cleveland.com) — A Lakewood state lawmaker is pushing to ensure a proposed $3.05 million penalty tied to repeated power outages directly benefits customers, not Ohio's general fund, and could mean upgrades to Lakewood's electric system. The same Capitol Letter briefing also covers Burke Lakefront Airport, voting rules, policing, air pollution rules, and tributes to Dolly Parton, offering broader context on decisions at the Statehouse.
