📰 News we're reading

1. Big wins for Newark City Schools: Hillview earns 5‑Star honor, NHS students clean up the city (mountvernonnews.com) — Newark families can celebrate Hillview Elementary earning the state’s top 5‑Star rating while Newark High School students fanned out across city parks for a large‑scale cleanup. More than 130 teens spent May 8 mulching and picking up trash, underscoring Newark City Schools’ focus on both academic excellence and hands‑on community service that directly benefits local neighborhoods.

2. Newark man faces new charges after escape prompts school lockdown (newarkadvocate.com) — A Newark man’s alleged escape from Licking County Municipal Court on April 29 triggered a districtwide awareness-level lockdown at Newark City Schools, briefly restricting building access while classes continued. Police say he was caught about an hour later nearby, and he now faces an additional escape charge with bond set at $100,000 while he remains in the county jail.

3. Central Ohio honorees recognized at Ohio Fire Service Hall of Fame & Awards Ceremony (abc6onyourside.com) — A Central Ohio resident who rescued three people from a burning Newark home last August has been honored with the Ohio Fire Service Citizens Award at a statewide ceremony in Columbus. Officials say he twice entered the smoke-filled house without protective gear, while another longtime fire educator was also recognized for decades of service.

4. Roundup: Mahoney blanks Johnstown, but Johnnies bounce back big time (newarkadvocate.com) — Newark High’s softball and boys lacrosse teams both faced tough losses this week, with the Wildcats falling to Watkins Memorial and the lacrosse squad dropping a senior‑night matchup at Johnstown. The wider roundup highlights strong performances by several nearby Licking County teams, but Newark athletes still delivered standout moments, including a grand slam from Lexi Shanaberg and solid efforts across multiple sports.
