SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH - The candidates for the 2017 US Presidential Scholars have been announced and three Shaker Heights residents landed on the list. Two students from Hathaway Brown are on the list and one student from Shaker Heights High School. The state of Ohio got 156 students onto the list.

Students are selected for recognition based on a variety of categories and accomplishments. Namely, the selection committee looks for academic success, artistic excellence, essays, school evaluations, transcripts, community service, leadership, and demonstrated commitment to ideals.

The US Presidential Scholars program was formed in 1964 and has honored about 7,000 high school students throughout its existence, a press release from the program says. The program was expanded in 1979 to pay heed to student creating stunning work in the fields of visual, literary and performing arts. In 2015, the program was expanded again to recognize student accomplishments in career and technical education fields.
