Stow's Swim Team Successful at Weekend Competition

This past week the SMF Swim Team spent a lot of time competing in the water.  The boys and girl’s team had a duel meet Friday night at Medina.  In a close meet, the girl’s came up short 155-144.  Stow had a diver who was unable to compete due to illness and a couple of disqualifications in the IM that made the difference.  That gives the girl’s a 2-1 record in the River Division (2-2 over all) The boy’s team won 178-125 as they continue to remain undefeated in the River Division of the NOC at 3-0, 3-1 over all.

Scoring second place in the Girl’s 200 Medley Relay Sr. Becca Kassinger, Sr. Jessie Lee, Sr. Megan Kolke and Soph. Tori McCauley.  In the Girl’s 200 Free Soph. Lindsey Adkins took second and Fr. Maddie Dyer took third.

In the Girl’s 200 IM, Fr. Kelly Vantrease took second.  In the Girl’s 50 Free Tori McCauley took second.  In the Girl’s 100 Butterfly, Soph. Jenni Heid took first with a time of 1:06.40 and Kolke took third. 

In the Girl’s 100 Free, Fr. Kelsey Wenk and Lindsey Adkins took second and 3rd.  A clean sweep of first, second and third of the 500 Free helped keep the meet close for the girls.  Scoring first Maddie Dyer with a time of 5:52.51, second Soph. Ainsley Wilbur, and third Kelly Vantrease.

The Girl’s 200 Medley Relay of Kelsey Wenk, Kelly Vantrease, Lindsey Adkins and Jenni Heid took first with a time of 1:49.24.  Kelsey Wenk took first in the Girl’s 100 back with a time of 1:07.98. 

In the Girl’s 100 Breast, Jessie Lee took first with a time of 1:13.93 and Jenni Heid took third.  Stow took second and third in the 400 Free Relay.  Taking second were Lindsey Adkins, Tori McCauley, Kelly Vantrease and Kelsey Wenk.  Taking third were Ainsley Wilbur, Becca Kassinger, Jessie Lee and Rachael Moretti. 

Scoring for the Bulldogs in the boys meet in the Boy’s 200 IM in second place Sr. Chris Bluohm, Jr. Jacob Earle, Sr. Joe Freudeman and Soph.

Parker Gabriel.  Taking 3rd place Sr. Greg Dyer, Sr. Nick Hall, Soph. Mason Gabriel and Soph. Justin Faluotico.  Soph. Cody Vantrease took first in the Boy’s 200 Free with a time of 1:50.74.  Sr. Jeremy Wentz and Jacob Earl took second and third in the Boy’s 200 IM. Parker Gabriel took first in the 50 Free with a time of 24.72 and Jr. Cameron Potter took second. 

Will Shepard took second place in the diving competition with a score of 123.83.  In the Boy’s 100 Fly Sr. Joe Freudeman took first with a 59.35 and Cameron Potter took second. 

In the Boy’s 100 Free Jeremy Wentz took first with a time of 53.41 and Parker Gabriel took second.  Cody Vantrease took second in the Boy’s 500 Free.  The Boy’s 200 Free Relay of Jeremy Wentz, Jacob Earle, Cameron Potter and Cody Vantrease took first with a time of 1:36.55.  Taking 3rd for Stow was the relay team of Fr. Max Bauer, Soph. Schuyler Morris, Fr. Cory Dyer and Sr. Nick Hall. 

Chris Blohm and Joe Freudeman took second and third in the Boy’s 100 Back.  In the Boy’s 100 Breast Jacob Earle took first with a time of 1:06.45.  Stow finished the meet with a first and second place finish in the Boy’s 400 Free Relay.  Scoring first with a time of 3:35.82 was the relay of Jeremy Wentz, Cameron Potter, Parker Gabriel and Cody Vantrease.  Scoring second was the relay of Greg Dyer, Justin Faluotico, Mason Gabriel and Joe Freudeman.

Senior captain Jeremy Wentz said, “I see a lot of potential for the guys swim team."

"Everybody is hard working and for most guys the work is already paying off," assistant coach, Kaity Detzel said. “For Medina, the boys as a team had a lot of great swims and personal best times. They swam with heart and energy. The girl’s team had close races in almost every event. There were a few questionable calls, but they pulled together as a team and tried to rally from behind. Unfortunately, they fell short, but it was still a great meet with some promising times.”

 

VIKING INVITATIONAL 

After the Medina meet Friday evening, the varsity was back loading the bus at 6:00am and headed to Cleveland State University’s Busby Natatorium for the 2011 Viking Invitational.  37th VIKING SWIMMING AND DIVING INVITATIONAL at The Robert F. Busbey Natatorium at CLEVELAND STATE UNIVERSITY.  Cody Vantrease advanced in two individual events and the teams qualified two relays. 

Finishing 20th in the Girl’s 200 Medley was.

Cody Vantrease was the only swimmer to qualify in individual events.  Cody finished 15th out of 110 swimmers in the Boy’s 100 Free with a time of :50.71 and he finished 17th out of 60 swimmers in the Boy’s 100 Fly with a time of 57.47

"The boys raced with all the energy they could after a long day of intense races, and I'm proud of them for what they accomplished. Although Cody Vantrease’s races were back-to-back, he managed to get a personal best time in one of the events. He showed a lot of spirit and determination, and I am very excited to see how the rest of the season goes," said Wetzel.
