🌱 12-Year-Old Dies Tragically In Monroe Co. Fire + West Toledo Arson

Here are the top five stories in Toledo today:

  1. For the second year of its inception as a federal holiday, Toledo celebrated Juneteenth, which local NAACP president Willie Perryman says celebrates the history of and continued fight for freedom and equality for Black Americans. Hotbox Bistro owner Keitha Speares was particularly proud to be open Monday and serves as a source of Black culture and history. (WTOL)
  2. Toledo man Raymond L. Walker, 55, has been charged with child solicitation and distribution of obscene matter to a minor in Indiana. Walker, already a registered sex offender, is accused of sending explicit photos and suggesting moving out of state together to an Indiana Sheriff's Deputy posing as an underage girl. (WTVG)
  3. Throughout the month of July, Toledo city pools are offering free swim lessons Wednesdays and Thursdays noon - 1 p.m. Spots are limited and registration is by phone and email. (WTVG)
  4. Toledo Fire & Rescue crews responded to a small fire at The Cedars Apartments in West Toledo on Monday, resulting in the arrest of one individual for arson. No injuries were reported in the relatively small fire. (WTOL)
  5. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office announced that 12-year-old Malaki Christian Giles died in a detached garage fire around 1:30 a.m. in Petersburg, MI on Monday morning. Malaki's 37-year-old father and 13-year-old brother were treated at Toledo Hospital for burns. (WNWO NBC 24)

  • With temperatures expected to stay around 100 degrees, the Toledo Human Society is anticipating an uptick in neglected pet cases this week. Dogs can die from excessive heat in only a few minutes, so make sure to have a shady, cool place and plenty of water for your pets. (WTVG)
  • The Blue Man Group has been added to the 2022-2023 season at Stranahan Theatre, which is already hosting Jesus Christ Superstar, Dear Evan Hansen, and more. (WTVG)
  • The Great Race is stopping by Perrysburg today from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Featuring antique cars, the race began in Rhode Island and is finishing in North Dakota. (WTVG)
  • The Greater Toledo Community Foundation offers nearly $300 million in aid to several local nonprofits, along with an additional $300,000 to be awarded to new and existing projects. (Toledo City Paper)
