🌱 Arrest In West Toledo Burglary + TARTA Restrictions Reinstated

Here are the top five stories today in Toledo:
- Toledo Fire & Rescue Station 17, located at 1041 W. Central Avenue, was hit by gunfire at midnight on New Year's Day. According to Pvt. Sterling Rahe, a bullet came through the station roof, though luckily no injuries were reported. (WTOL)
- The Toledo Police Department responded to a non-fatal shooting early Sunday morning on North Westwood Avenue. 23-year-old Shawteara Gaiter was transported to Toledo Hospital after she told police that 25-year-old Paul Williams had shot her before fleeing. Williams was found hiding in a trash can on Farnham Road and arrested on multiple charges including aggravated burglary. (WNWO NBC 24)
- Edna Brown, a fixture in Toledo politics, has passed away at the age of 81 on Saturday. Brown served on the Toledo City Council, Ohio's 48th House District, and Ohio's 11th Senate District. She also was the First Vice President of the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus and the first and only Black representative for Lucas County in the Ohio Senate. Several area politicians, including Mayor Kapszukiewicz, U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur, and U.S. Rep. Bob Latta have all expressed their admiration and condolences. (WTOL)
- Toledo Police are investigating after a car was shot around 20 times at the intersection of Bancroft and Glenwood. No injuries were reported, including the man driving the car at the time of the shooting. A nearby house was struck in the incident, and police do not believe the shooting was random. - With COVID cases on the rise, the Toledo Area Transit Authority (TARTA) is reinstating several safety measures first put in place at the beginning of the pandemic. Riders will have to enter public transportation vehicles through the rear doors and wear masks, according to TARTA CEO Laura Koprowski. TARTA will remain fare-free through July 2022. - A new exhibition featuring artwork from African-American artists from the Souls Grown Deep Foundation will debut at the Toledo Museum of Art on January 15. "Living Legacies: Art of the African American South" is set to run through May 1. (Press Publications Inc.)
- On Saturday, January 15 the Toledo Symphony Orchestra will host its first concert of the new 2022 season. Titled "New Year, New World," the event will celebrate America's musical legacy with tributes to composer Adolphus Hailstork and featuring jazz artist Janinah Burnett.(bgindependentmedia.org)
- Proud parents Heidi and Tyler Boone of Sylvania celebrated their very own Baby New Year after Layla Kaye Boone was born shortly after midnight at ProMedica Flower Hospital on Saturday. Boone was born at 7 pounds, 12 ounces and was 19.5 inches long. (13abc Action News)
