🌱 Boxer Sentenced In Strip Club Assault + Alarming Overdoses

First, today's weather:

Here are the top stories in Toledo today:
- The tree lighting ceremony at the Mercy Saint Vincent Hospital in Downtown Toledo was canceled due to COVID concerns. Chief Medical Officer Dr. James Tita cited Lucas County's "surging" COVID numbers and full hospitals as reasons for the decision. (13abc Action News)
- Toledo Police are investigating an alarming number of overdose deaths that have occurred since October 2021. 26 people have died, including 11 in November alone. Though the numbers are similar to 2020, the Lucas County Drug Abuse Response Team (DART) has found differences in the kinds of drugs used: namely an increase in methamphetamine mixed with fentanyl. Fentanyl test strips are available from the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department. (WTOL)
- The Glass City River Wall, which was scheduled to be finished this summer before unexpected delays, should be complete by the end of this year. Spanning 28 silos along the Maumee River, the mural will be the largest in the U.S. (13abc Action News)
- Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz announced Monday that the City of Toledo will perform another pass of leaf pickup. Dates for the pickup can be accessed online, and residents have a number of other options for disposal including free drop-off at Bowman Park, Detwiler Park, Ravine Park, and the former Ohio Dept. of Transportation (ODOT) site at Detroit and Glendale. - Toledo champion boxer Robert Easter Jr. pleaded no contest on November 10, 2021 for punching a 28-year-old woman at Bucks Rack City strip club on Telegraph Road in August of this year. Easter held the International Boxing Federation's lightweight title from 2016-2018 and was sentenced to two years probation and anger management classes. (WTOL)

- Toledo's Housing Commissioner Tiffanie McNair reports there are resources available for families in need of rental assistance. Toledoans will be able to apply for assistance via the online portal sometime before Christmas. (13abc Action News)
- Local health officials are encouraging Toledoans to maintain safety protocols to protect against a potential new strain of COVID-19 known as the Omicron variant. The best ways to fight COVID are to practice social distancing, wash hands frequently, wear masks indoors, and get the vaccine or booster. (WNWO NBC 24)
- The State of Ohio has announced the first set of winners in its "Vax-2-School" campaign, which is offering scholarships to anyone between 5 and 25 who gets at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Winners include students from Rossford, Fremont, Perrysburg, and Toledo. (13abc Action News)
- Monday night saw Toledo's first significant snowfall of the season, measuring 2.5 inches at Toledo Express Airport. Temperatures are expected to rise throughout the week, but Toledoans may see more snow or rain this Friday. (13abc Action News)
