🌱 COVID Hospitalizations + New Mud Hens Manager + Youth Programs

Morning, Toledo! Let's get this Friday started off right. Here's everything you need to know about what's happening in town today.


First, today's weather:

Here are the top stories in Toledo today:

  1. The Toledo Mud Hens have announced hiring Gary Jones as its new team manager. He comes from Triple-A baseball team the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Jones was also the third base coach with the Chicago Cubs from 2014-2017, including when the Cubs won the World Series in 2016. (WTOL)
  2. 16-year-old Tate Myre, one of the four Oxford, Michigan students who was tragically murdered on November 29 in a school shooting, had spent the previous Saturday attending the Toledo/Akron football game at UT's Glass Bowl Stadium. Myre was a potential football recruit for the UT Rockets before his life was senselessly cut short. (13abc Action News)
  3. Concerns for the coronavirus are on the rise as 1 in 3 patients in Northwest Ohio emergency rooms have COVID-19. Representatives from the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department and ProMedica Toledo Hospital are warning of the seriousness of this development as hospitals may be forced to go on bypass or cancel scheduled surgeries.   4. The City of Toledo has hired Joe Fausnaugh as its first Director of Parks and Youth Services. A number of new programs will be implemented as a result, which aim to keep the city's young people occupied with healthy activities such as camp, theater, and sports. (13abc Action News)
  5. Southview High School was host to the first-ever Youth Suicide Prevention event, put on by the Sylvania Prevention Alliance and the Lucas County Suicide Prevention Coalition. The groups hope to destigmatize mental health struggles and educate the community about resources available. (WNWO NBC 24)

  • Otterbein Sunset House at 4020 Indian Road in Toledo will be hosting a Christmas celebration on Monday, December 6. The event will include horse-drawn carriage rides, Christmas lights displays, and ice carvings. (bgindependentmedia.org)
  • You may see a different sort of fire truck driving around Toledo these days, one that doesn't put out fires but instead quenches thirst. Local entrepreneur Kevin Mullan has renovated a fire truck with several taps on the side to serve beer from local breweries and even hot chocolate during the winter. Known as "Ladder 419," the truck is working in conjunction with Tapped 419 and will focus on serving local fare. (WTOL)
  • All University of Toledo faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders are encouraged to participate in an online survey to help shape the future of UToledo. The university's Strategic Planning Committee sent the survey via email on November 30 and it can also be accessed at its website. (Press Release Desk)
  • New York became the first state in the U.S. to implement "supervised injection sites," which aim to prevent overdose deaths for people struggling with substance abuse. Julian Mack of the Community Solidarity Response Network in Toledo thinks the Glass City should consider hosting the sites as well to save lives. (WTOL)
