Here are the top stories today in Toledo:
- The Toledo-Lucas County Sustainability Commission is encouraging community members to take on neighborhood improvement projects and has awarded several $500 grants to existing groups. The recipients of the funds include the Collingwood Community Center, Scottwood Community Garden, Salem Lutheran Church's urban garden, and the Sofia Quintero Art and Cultural Center's Broadway Urban Garden Greenspace. - Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz has announced how the City of Toledo will spend the $180 million it received through the American Rescue Plan. The funds will be used to hire 100 new police officers and 42 firefighters and provide raises on police contracts. All residential lead lines will be replaced, abandoned buildings will be demolished, and there will be an increase in youth recreational programming. (WTOL)
- A Toledo driver has died following a single-car crash into the maintenance building at the Lucas County Rec Center. Maumee Police discovered the scene around 1 AM Wednesday morning. The driver first crashed through a fence and then into a cement wall and was pronounced dead at the scene. (WTOL)
- A home has been saved from demolition by the Old West End Association due to its rare architectural significance. The home had been set to be demolished by the Lucas County Land Bank but is now being renovated by residents in the historic Toledo neighborhood. (13abc Action News)
- The Toledo City Council has voted 7-5 to turn a park green space on Franklin Avenue into a 46-unit apartment to house the city's homeless population. The plan is controversial, with Councilwoman Vanice Williams expressing concerns for the current residents and the red tape involved with such a project. (WNWO NBC 24)

- This Friday marks the end of the Toledo Lucas County Public Library "Latinx" cultural heritage celebration that began September 15. The month-long celebration included cooking classes, art workshops with the Sofia Quintero Art and Cultural Center, and selected readings celebrating Latinx culture. (WNWO NBC 24)
- Maumee Bay State Park has seen a number of structural and cosmetic improvements over the years and is due for exterior finishing as well. Opened in 1991, the park has already seen $1 million in improvements with even more on the way. (13abc Action News)
- Toledo Fire & Rescue responded to the Imagination Station in Downtown Toledo for a broken refrigerant line. Crews had to get to the roof to make repairs and there was no fire in the building. (13abc Action News)
- Jeep's Toledo Assembly Complex is hosting an event for hiring part-time workers this Friday at Owens Community College. The event will run from 9-3 and hourly production positions start at $15.78/hour with medical and prescription drug coverage available after 90 days. (WTOL)
