🌱 House Fire After Homicide + Dollar General Vaccine Clinics

Happy Wednesday, people of Toledo! Let's get you all caught up on what's happening locally to start today off on an informed note.


First, today's weather:

Here are the top stories in Toledo today:

  1. Four Toledo Dollar General stores are hosting free COVID vaccine clinics this month. The vaccines will be administered by Rite Aid pharmacists on October 19, 20, 21 and 25 and Medicaid members are eligible for a $100 VIsa gift card while supplies last. (13abc Action News)
  2. A Toledo group focusing on equality issues for the LGBTQ+ community hosted a public forum to ask questions of incumbent Mayor Kapszukiewicz and former mayor Carty Finkbeiner on Tuesday. The group, Equality Toledo Community Action, hosted the event at KeyBank Discovery Theater near the Imagination Station in Downtown Toledo. (WTOL)
  3. Local marketing organization Destination Toledo has won multiple awards at both the Ohio Travel Association's RUBY Awards show and the Ohio Association of Convention & Visitor Bureaus' STAR Awards. Discover Toledo is the main Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) for the Toledo area and responsible for stimulating the local economy through tourism. (toledo.com)
  4. The City of Toledo has announced two new grants for a "vibrancy initiative" meant to bolster building store fronts in low-to-moderate income areas. The Facade Improvement Grant and the First Floor Whitebox Pilot are two programs that will allow for a 50% matching grant of up to $40,000 reimbursement for improvement expenses. (13abc Action News)
  5. A home at in the 1100 block of Montrose Avenue, where 18-year-old Davon Butler was shot and killed, has been destroyed by a fire less than 24 hours later. Toledo Fire & Rescue was already investigating the site due to the homicide and there were no injuries reported from the fire. (WTOL)

  • 13abc's James Starks and Toledo historian Tedd Long visit Inky's Italian Food restaurant. Inky's, a Toledo staple supported by 3 generations of the Incorvaia family, has been serving delicious food to the community since 1957. (13abc Action News)
  • The Salvation Army is currently accepting applications for holiday help for Toledo families in need. The assistance includes toy donations for children 0-12 and Kroger gift cards for holiday meals. Only Lucas County residents are eligible and applications are due by October 25. (WTOL)
  • The Lucas County Rec Center will host a Holiday Light Show beginning November 19 and running through the end of December. The show will be drive-thru only with multiple ticket options. (13abc Action News)
  • Beginning Friday night a stretch of I-475 in Toledo will be closed for a bridge straightening project by the Ohio Department of Transportation. The closure will occur between I-75 and US-23 through Monday, October 25. (13abc)
