Here are the top five stories today in Toledo:
- 10-year-old Damia Ezell has died after she and her uncle 24-year-old Kenneth White were shot at while in a vehicle in the 1900 block of Collingwood Boulevard in Toledo's Old West End neighborhood. Toledo Police report the shots were fired from a dark vehicle on Saturday around 1 PM and the suspect is still at large. (13abc Action News)
- A South Toledo fire on Sunday evening claimed the life of a dog, according to firefighters with the Toledo Fire & Rescue Department. Broadway Street was closed after crews battled the blaze at a duplex in the 2500 block of Broadway, just northeast of the Toledo Zoo, and the cause remains under investigation. (WTOL)
- 50-year-old James Seibers has entered an Alford plea for charges relating to the shooting death of a 16-year-old East Toledo teenager in March 2019. The plea allows for Seibers to maintain his innocence while admitting there is enough evidence against him to convict. He will be sentenced April 4. (13abc Action News)
- Residents of South Toledo have organized to protest the city's proposal to rezone the Southland Shopping Plaza for an affordable housing apartment complex. Opponents point out the commercial nature of the space, which is also set to host the new Earnest Brew Works site, as being an inappropriate space for residences. The City Council is holding a meeting on the proposal Wednesday at 4 PM at One Government Center. (WTOL)
- Lucas County Prosecutor Grant Kozy has been sentenced for operating a vehicle while intoxicated on Jan. 23. Kozy entered a no-contest plea Monday morning in the Toledo Municipal Court and was sentenced to a fine of $375, a three-day drivers intervention program, and a suspended license until Jan. 23. - UToledo students can learn about the university's new virtual reality technology at the Learning Enhancement Center on Wednesday, February 16. The new development will utilize Oculus Quest 2 headsets and showcase the ability to learn from tutors in a "hands-on" virtual environment. (Press Release Desk)
- The Utoledo Women's Basketball team beat rivals Bowling Green 80-51 at Savage Arena on Saturday. This is the first time the team has beaten Bowling Green twice in the same season since 2018-19, and the Rockets have a three game lead in the Mid-American Conference. (Press Release Desk)
- According to the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department, Northwest Ohio is seeing a significant rise in syphilis cases. The increase in numbers affects both men and women and the age range has been 17-78 years old. (WTOL)
