Rise and shine, Toledo! Here's everything you need to know to get this Tuesday started off right.

First, today's weather:

Mostly cloudy. High: 37 Low: 33.

Here are the top five stories in Toledo today:

  1. 27-year-old Gerald Dennis Mayes II has died after being shot in a car at the corner of Holland-Sylvania and Perrysburg-Holland Roads in Springfield Township on Sunday evening. The incident is being investigated by the Lucas County Sheriff's Office and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation. (WTOL)
  2. Lucas County is exploring options for building renovations through Brownfield Remediation dollars, a program that will help rid county buildings of asbestos. Some of the buildings identified for renovations are the former Child Study Institute behind the Domestic Relations Court, the Ohio Means Jobs building which housed the Board of Elections Early Vote Center, and the former Jobs and Family Services building. (13abc Action News)
  3. Toledo celebrated its 21st annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Day Monday, with performances by local vocal and dance groups, statements from politicians, and a scholarship award from the University of Toledo. The focus of this year's event was "everyday activism" in the hopes that citizens can further spread the message Dr. King shared. (WNWO NBC 24)
  4. The Northwestern Water and Sewer District has announced road closures relating to Perrysburg's sewer renovations project. Southbound West South Boundary will be closed between Front Street and West Sixth Street through March. Indiana Avenue between West Boundary Street and North Ridge Drive will be closed as well and the renovations will cost around $750,000 to repair. (WTOL)
  5. In honor of what would have been Betty White's 100th birthday on Monday, several local animal shelters are receiving donations. The Lucas County Pit Crew benefited from contributions made in Ms. White's name, and even named a rescue dog in her honor. (13abc Action News)

Doing a "Dry January" or just looking for a flavorful alternative to regular cocktails? Here's a suggestion: try a non-alcoholic drink from our partners at Betera. Created by an award-winning chef from natural botanicals, Betera's drinks come in 3 flavors — Ginger-Orange, Elderflower-Lime and Rhubarb-Hibiscus. We tried Ginger-Orange, and it was excellent — lightly effervescent, floral with a hint of bitterness and the sippability of a cocktail.

Betera is offering readers of the Daily a 15% discount on their first order: use PATCH15 at checkout. Highly recommended — you can try Betera here.
