Here are the top stories today in Toledo:
- The East Toledo Family Center has been serving Toledoans in the "05" ZIP code for 120 years. What began as a tent ministry has transformed into a permanent facility on Varland Avenue to help children and families thrive. Featuring renovations and new appliances, the family center is fueled by grants and private donations and last month held its first ever "Nickel Dash 5K" at the new Glass City Metropark. (WTOL)
- El Tipico is the oldest Mexican restaurant in Toledo, having opened on South Avenue in 1968. The restaurant serves only organic and grass-fed meats and vegetables, but is facing a steak shortage because of supply chain issues. (WTOL)
- An abandoned church at the corner of Locust and Delaware in North Toledo is a hotbed of homelessness and crime according to residents of the neighborhood. Though residents have reportedly called Engage Toledo multiple times, the city has done nothing to improve the situation. There are concerns for drug use and prostitution occurring in the former place of worship. (13abc Action News)
- Toledo Police have released body cam footage of a man arrested inside the Toledo Technology Academy after a car chase that occurred last Friday. The footage shows 39-year-old Leland Pickens running into a Toledo Public School where he was apprehended by a pipefitter and other contractors working in the building. Pickens can be heard saying he wanted to be shot by police. (13abc Action News)
- Toledo Fire Chief Brian Byrd will retired on December 10, 2021 according to the Fire & Rescue Dept. spokesperson Pvt. Sterling Rahe. Byrd joined the fire department in 1988, was promoted to lieutenant in 1992, captain in 1997, battalion chief in 2000 and deputy chief in 2008. Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz appointed him chief in July 2018 after the previous chief, Luis Santiago, announced his retirement. (WNWO NBC 24)
