Here are the top stories today in Toledo:
- Last month the Toledo Refining Company donated $100,000 to The Ability Center's Accessible Community Fund. The Ability Center, which has also partnered with the Toledo Museum of Art and the City of Toledo, will match all donations, which are used to fund community accessibility improvements. - Waite High School hosted an anti-gun violence rally Tuesday night to address violence in the Glass City. Woodward High School hosted a follow-up meeting on Wednesday afternoon. Toledo has seen an uptick in homicides this year, something these meetings hope to prevent. (WTOL)
- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded almost $500,00 to the Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments (TMACOG), the City of Toledo, and Owens Community College in an effort to bolster the area's water and wastewater workforce. As several workers prepare for retirement, there is a greater need to ensure the future of Northwest Ohio's viable drinking water. (bgindependentmedia.org)
- Toledo's PET Bull Project, which provides resources for families with pets in need, is searching for a new building as its lease is up at the end of November. The organization provides pet food for low-income families, low-cost training and grooming, and an adoption program. - The Toledo Police Department has announced the appointment of a special prosecutor dedicated to crimes involving firearms. The initiative comes as Toledo marks a deadly year for gun violence. - Waterville Playshop is putting on Matilda the Musical this weekend at the Maumee Indoor Theatre. The Tony Award-winning show is based on the classic Roald Dahl book and features original songs and choreography. (BG Independent Media)
- Author Mitch Albom is coming to the Main Branch of the Toledo Lucas County Library in Downtown Toledo on November 8. Albom is promoting his new book The Stranger in the Lifeboat and tickets must be purchased in advance. (WTOL 11)
- The parents of 7-year-old Kaylee Turney, who died of cancer last month, have turned their tragedy into an effort to help families facing the same struggle. The organization, Team Kaylee, is located on Alexis Road and will feature a grand opening on November 6. (13abc Action News)
