Westlake Going to State Science Olympiad

Westlake High School's Science Olympiad teams took first place at a regional competition to punch their ticket to state competition.

WESTLAKE, OH - Westlake's educational extracurriculars are on a winning streak lately. This time the Westlake Science Olympiad teams place first at the Regional Tournament at St. Ignatius High School, which was held March 4. The victory qualifies the teams for the State Science Olympiad Tournament on April 1 at the Ohio State University.

The Division B (7-9 grade levels) and Division C (10-12 grad levels) placed first in their respective divisions at the regional. Tournaments are set up similar to a track and field meet, where teams compete in a series of 23 STEM-related events that add up to an overall score.

Both teams are coached by Westlake parent and science enthusiast Laura Lathem.

The Science Olympiad provides standards-based challenges to nearly 7,000 teams across the US. The events are rotated each year to reflect a new topic.

April 1 will not only see Westlake Schools competing in the State Science Olympiad. A member of the high school's Math Club will also be competing at the Ohio High School Mathematics Invitational Olympiad on April 1 at Capital University in Columbus.

Junior Ryan Karpuszka ranked ninth statewide following a regional competition and now has the chance to bring home more accolades at state competition.
