Westlake High Student Wins Rotary Speech Contest

Sophomore Esther Park will move on to a district-wide competition. From there, she could qualify for the national contest.

WESTLAKE, OH - The Westlake/Bay Village annual Speech Competition was held recently and a Westlake High School student took home first place. Sophomore Esther Park's victory means she's moving on to district competition and a shot at the national Speech Competition contest.

The speech contest poses a challenge to students in ethics. The goal is for the students to use the Rotay's Four Way Test to solve the challenge. The Four Way Test is Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build good will and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

The Rotary Club's speech competition is broken into three rounds. First, there's the local competition, which Park just won. Then a district-wide competition. The winner of the district competition moves on to a national competition.

Park was not the only Westlake High School student to do well in the local contest. Sophomore Katie Cirincione took second place in the competition, Thomas Hanson place third, and Jonah Petty was awarded Honorable Mention.

Park will compete against other local winners in the district competition on April 8 at Aurora High School. The winner of that contest will move on to national competition.
