Westlake Students Clean Up At Technology Competition

The Ohio Technology & Engineering Educators Association state conference and school exhibits competition saw WHS students bring home gold.

WESTLAKE, OH - The Ohio Technology & Engineering Educators Association (OTEEA) state conference and school exhibits competition was held in Marion, Ohio at the TRECA corporate headquarters last weekend. The Westlake High School Technology & Engineering (T&E) Department was selected for the OTEEA's best state project and exhibit display during the event.

During the event, the Westlake T&E Department earned several accolades in the school exhibits competition, including the title of state champion for their "Best of Show" awards in three different technology categories. They also earned the rare Zupancic award, as well as a "Best of Show" runner-up award.

Students from around the state entered over 340 projects in nine different Technology categories. A number of Westlake students now have their names on a variety of awards. The state champion title went to the following students and teams:

  • Seniors Mark Sargent, Jackson Liang, Sneha Ramachandran, and David Eppele for their "Urban Reuse House" and energy efficient model home design in the Construction/Architecture Technology category. They also won the Zupancic Award, given to a single outstanding project selected from all of Ohio's "Best of Show" winners.
  • The team of senior David Eppele, sophomore Robert Fulop, sophomore Austin Loosli, and sophomore Ethan Simon for their drone part redesign in the Manufacturing/Rapid Prototyping Technology category.
  • Sophomore Connor Harte for his Drilling and Tapping Jig rendering in the Computer Generated Technology category.

The following students won the runner-up Best of Show award for their drone part redesign in the Manufacturing/Rapid Prototyping Technology Category:

  • Senior Jackson Liang, junior Jillian Eddy, and junior Erik Hoke

  • Junior Joel Howe, freshman Allison Hook, and freshman Molly Smith for their Cardboard Chair in the Manufacturing/Materials & Processes Technology category
  • Sophomores Katie Willi, Connor Harte, and Connor Reis for their "Urban Reuse House" and energy efficient model home design in the Construction/Architecture Technology category
  • Junior Michael Rees, sophomore Robert Fulop, and sophomore Patrick Gheen for their “Urban Reuse House” and energy efficient model home design in the Construction/Architecture Technology category.
  • Senior Sneha Ramachandran, sophomore Katie Willi, sophomore Connor Harte, and sophomore Patrick Gheen for their drone part redesign in the Manufacturing/Rapid Prototyping Technology category.
  • Senior Mark Sargent, junior Michael Rees, and sophomore Connor Rei for their drone part redesign in the Manufacturing/Rapid Prototyping Technology category.

To cap off a successful day, the WHS Technology & Engineering Department received the “Best of Conference” award in the Outstanding Technology Display category.
