1. Youngstown Police Department investigating weekend shooting death (mahoningmatters.com) — A man died after being shot multiple times near E. Lucius Avenue in Youngstown, and city detectives along with the Mahoning County coroner are actively investigating. Police say there are no suspects yet and are asking anyone with information to call the Youngstown Police Detective Bureau or Crime Stoppers, where anonymous tips may qualify for a reward.
2. Finalist named for Lumen Christi Award (tribtoday.com) — The Diocese of Youngstown is celebrating as Hispanic Ministry coordinator Cristina Hernandez is named one of eight finalists nationwide for the Catholic Extension Society's 2026-27 Lumen Christi Award. Her work supports immigrant families and Spanish-language ministries, including Masses at St. Dominic in Youngstown and other regional parishes, with potential new funding if she wins the top honor this fall.
3. Wagner Joins Mahoning County Mental Health and Recovery Board (businessjournaldaily.com) — Mahoning County's Mental Health and Recovery Board in Youngstown has hired licensed social worker Rachel Wagner as its new justice system behavioral health navigator, linking courts, jails, and community providers. Her background with Youngstown Municipal Court, Belmont Pines, and local justice agencies is expected to strengthen how residents with mental health needs are connected to care.
4. Howland business fire causes interior damage (tribtoday.com) — Fire crews in nearby Howland quickly contained a blaze at Big Daddy's Smoke Shop on Niles Cortland Road, limiting damage to the rear and interior of the business and leaving no one injured. Mutual aid units, including the Youngstown Air Reserve Station Fire Department, were placed in service but ultimately not needed as state investigators now work to determine the cause.
5.
