📰 News we're reading

1. Meander Reservoir water consumers may see water bill increase next year (wkbn.com) — If you get your water in Youngstown from Meander Reservoir, expect a 17% rate hike starting Jan. 1, 2027, with additional increases in 2028 and 2029 to fund dam renovations and rising costs. The Mahoning Valley Sanitary District is asking local judges to approve the plan, and officials say the higher wholesale rates will be passed on to customers.

2. Receiver says SOBE's future is bleak without funds (wkbn.com) — Downtown Youngstown buildings that rely on SOBE Thermal's steam system could lose heat this winter unless major public or private funding arrives within about 60 days. A court-appointed receiver outlines mounting debts, needed boiler repairs, and three stark options, including shutting the plant and pipelines if emergency rate hikes and new money don't materialize.

3. Ohio launches probe into two Valley schools over state testing anomalies (wfmj.com) — Families in Youngstown should know that Southside Academy has been named, along with Newton Falls Elementary, in a statewide investigation into "significant anomalies" in recent Ohio State Testing results. State education officials are reviewing data from 52 schools after irregularities surfaced in Columbus, and local administrators say they've only just received the information and aren't ready to comment yet.

4. 'Zombie' Foreclosures Are Most Common in These Midwestern Cities (lmtonline.com) — Youngstown ranks at the top nationally for so‑called "zombie" foreclosures, with more than one in ten homes in foreclosure sitting vacant and abandoned. A new report warns these properties can drag down nearby home values and safety, but also notes they may present opportunities for experienced cash buyers who can handle repairs, liens, and back taxes.

5. Father, son convicted of killing mail carrier (vindy.com) — A Youngstown man and his son from Warren have been convicted in federal court for the premeditated 2024 killing of a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier on his route in Warren. Jurors found they stalked the victim in a pickup before opening fire, and both now face potential life sentences when they return for sentencing in December.
