1. Jewish community preparing for annual food drive next month (wkbn.com) — Youngstown's Jewish Community Relations Council is in the middle of its annual High Holiday food drive, running through Oct. 14 and benefiting local families via Second Harvest. You can drop off peanut butter, canned goods, pasta, cereal, tuna and more at several Youngstown locations, including the Jewish Community Center, Akiva Academy, Temple El Emeth and Ohev Beth Sholom.
   

2. YBI announces 2026 Taco Bell Foundation grant for more than $35K (mahoningmatters.com) — Youngstown students will see expanded virtual reality career exploration thanks to a $35,517 Taco Bell Foundation Community Grant awarded to YBI's Explore VR program. Now in its third consecutive year of support, the funding will help deliver immersive lessons that introduce local youth to new career paths and strengthen career readiness opportunities across the Youngstown area.
   

3. Youngstown library celebrates new play area, fresh exterior (wfmj.com) — Youngstown's East Library has reopened with a sturdier exterior, a new roof, and a jungle-themed, technology-free play area designed for kids' imaginations. The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County also added new enclosed meeting space, and during National Library Card Month you can get a free replacement card while checking out the refreshed branch.
   

4. New witness may delay start of murder trial - (vindy.com) — A Youngstown murder trial over the 2024 killing of Reynaldo Hernandez on Bott Street may be delayed after a Mahoning County jail inmate came forward claiming new information about one defendant. Prosecutors, defense attorneys, and Judge R. Scott Krichbaum are weighing whether the inmate's statements are credible enough to postpone Monday's scheduled joint trial and possibly appoint a new attorney.
   

5. YSU Centofanti Symposium to Focus on Opioid Crisis (businessjournaldaily.com) — Youngstown residents can attend a free Centofanti Symposium event on Oct. 15 at Stambaugh Auditorium, where Judge Jack Durkin and filmmaker Nancy Bannon will discuss her opioid-crisis documentary focused on Youngstown. Tickets are required but free, offering a chance to hear how local caregivers confront addiction and how Mahoning County's felony drug court experience shapes the conversation.
