📰 News we're reading

1. Massive data center campus unveiled for Enid (okenergytoday.com) — A group of Enid business leaders is proposing a 1,735-acre data center campus that could generate tens of millions annually for Enid Public Schools, city services, and other community needs. Backed by the Enid Regional Development Alliance, the project would use on-site power, avoid tapping Enid's drinking water, and add hardened infrastructure that could benefit Vance Air Force Base and residents across Garfield County.

2. Professional Rodeo Returns To Stride Bank Center (enidbuzz.com subscription) — Professional rodeo is coming back to downtown Enid with the Enid Ultimate Challenge Pro Rodeo at Stride Bank Center on Friday and Saturday, October 23-24, at 7 p.m. each night. Organizers promise top PRCA competitors, award-winning stock, and a full rodeo arena setup, giving Enid residents and visitors a high-energy fall entertainment option right in the heart of town.

3. 12 Places Where You Could Retire on $2,000 a Month (cheapism.com) — Enid is highlighted as one of a dozen U.S. cities where a retiree might stretch a $2,000 monthly budget, thanks largely to one-bedroom rents around $725 to $750. The piece notes that low housing costs can make Enid appealing, but also stresses that residents will likely need a car and must budget carefully for gas, insurance, and maintenance. It compares Enid with other affordable cities to show how far a modest retirement income can go.

4. Chime Already Used Stride Bank and Now Wants to Own It and its Dubious CRA Exam (innercitypress.com) — Chime Financial plans to buy Enid-based Stride Bank, National Association, for $590 million in cash, potentially renaming it Chime Bank by 2027. The deal, which still needs federal approval, would fold Stride's existing fintech-focused operations and mixed Community Reinvestment Act record into Chime's national strategy, raising questions about future oversight and how the combined bank will serve Oklahoma communities.

5. 'We intentionally structured it this way': School choice freeing up… (ocpathink.org) — Enid state Rep. Chad Caldwell is spotlighted for championing Oklahoma's Parental Choice Tax Credit, which he says both expands private-school options and leaves more than $15,000 per student in public-school funding. New data suggest over 7,300 students have switched from public to private schools, freeing up as much as $110 million for remaining public-school students while about $49 million went to tax credits. Supporters argue this structure benefits taxpayers and challenges claims that school choice harms public schools.
