Norman 11-Year-Old Smith O'hara Wins Voice of the Heartland After Last-Minute Entry, Turns $1,000 Prize Into Gifts for His Cancer-Stricken Gym Teacher and Sister (chicagomusicguide.com) — An 11-year-old Norman singer, Smith O’Hara, just won the Voice of the Heartland competition after entering at the last minute, then shared part of his $1,000 prize with his cancer-stricken gym teacher and his sister. Norman residents are starting to recognize him around town as his story of talent, generosity, and perseverance through partial hearing loss gains attention.
   

2. Flood Watch issued for south-central Oklahoma as Norman police issue safety reminder (okcfox.com) — Norman police are urging local drivers to avoid flooded roads as a Flood Watch covers parts of south-central Oklahoma from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday early afternoon. Officers say they’re monitoring conditions citywide, coordinating signage and inspections, and stressing that residents should never drive into standing or moving water or move barricades, even if water levels appear to drop.

Linda Kay Redmond (purcellregister.com) — Norman residents are being informed of the passing of 81-year-old Linda Kay Redmond, who died in Norman on September 27 and will be honored at services Friday, October 2, at Wadley’s Funeral Chapel. Remembered for her deep faith, love of family, animals, and gardening, she leaves a large, close-knit family and many friends in the Noble and Norman area.

OU announces new scholarship program for qualifying students (kfor.com) — A new OU Onward scholarship based in Norman could cover tuition and some fees for many in-state students whose families earn between $60,000 and $75,000 and don’t qualify for Oklahoma Promise. Starting in fall 2027, eligible full-time undergraduates can receive up to $15,532 in guaranteed gap funding after other aid is applied.
   

5. From Classroom to Community: How Service Learning Is Changing OU Students (news9.com) — OU students in Norman are taking their human relations lessons into the community through service-learning projects that support local children, first-generation students, people experiencing homelessness, and residents with developmental disabilities. Their professor says these hands-on efforts not only help Norman-area organizations, but also build students’ confidence and sense of purpose well beyond the classroom.
