Raindrop Tulsa Turkish House Book Club

book club; upcoming author visit; Jennifer Latham

Raindrop Tulsa Turkish House, 4444 W. Houston St. (81st) in Broken Arrow, is “a nonprofit organization that seeks to promote friendship and understanding through cultural experiences.” Raindrop Tulsa Turkish House sponsors a number of programs throughout the year: Ladies’ Coffee Nights, International Cooking Classes, Book Club (open to women and men), Ebru Classes, Fall and Spring Festivals, and frequent opportunities for dialogue about important international issues.

Jennifer Latham, author of Dreamland Burning, will speak at the next book club on February 15, 2018 at 6:00 PM. Formerly open only to ladies, the book club has recently invited men to join in the discussions.

Latham’s novel provides readers with two stories that come together. The book opens with Rowan’s story in the present day. Then it alternates with Will’s story from 1921, the year of the Race Riot in Tulsa, OK. When a skeleton is discovered in Rowan’s yard during a renovation project, Rowan becomes interested in knowing who the dead person is and how that body came to be buried under the old servants’ quarters in Maple Ridge. Her investigation leads her into learning about the Race Riot and the real people hurt by it.

A Kirkus Review reminds readers that “for more than 50 years, Tulsa’s schoolchildren didn’t learn about the race riot, and many outside of Tulsa remain unaware today. This masterfully told story fills this void.”
