Baker County property tax statements to hit the mail by Oct. 25th (elkhornmediagroup.com) — Property owners in Baker County, including those banking in Baker City, will see their 2026–27 property tax statements mailed by Oct. 25, with payments due Nov. 16 and options for discounts on early payment. You can pay by mail, a 24-hour courthouse drop box, select Baker City bank branches, phone, or a new online portal, with clear deadlines to avoid penalties.

Baker City Fire Department temporarily alters Burn Permit process during vendor switch (elkhornmediagroup.com) — If you need an outdoor burn permit in Baker City, you’ll temporarily apply through a web form and pay the $5 fee directly to City Hall instead of online. The Fire Department will email your permit once payment is confirmed while they switch vendors, a process expected to last two to four weeks. Residents can call or email Fire Chief Michael Carlson with questions.
   

3. BAKER, PINE EAGLE SPORTS: Cross-country, boys and girls soccer, volleyball results (bakercityherald.com) — Baker High School athletes had a full Thursday, with volleyball sweeping La Grande to stay second in the Greater Oregon League and boys soccer falling 1-0 yet holding second in league standings. Baker’s cross-country teams also turned in solid performances, highlighted by strong finishes from several Baker and Pine Eagle runners. The Bulldogs now look ahead to hosting Ontario in volleyball on Tuesday, Oct. 6.
   

4. October heat wave could break daily records (bakercityherald.com) — Expect an unusually hot first week of October in Baker City, with highs around 80 degrees and a chance to break several daily records at the airport. The National Weather Service says a July-like high-pressure ridge will keep temperatures well above normal through at least Oct. 8. The story also compares this warm spell to the record-setting October 2024 heat wave.
   

5. Toiling on the trails: Volunteers play key role in maintaining wilderness paths (eastoregonian.com) — Trail users around Baker City benefit from a small army of volunteers who spend days clearing fallen trees and brush from remote paths in the North Fork John Day Wilderness. A retired Pendleton scientist and his crew have already removed more than 300 downed trees this year, improving access to popular backcountry near the Elkhorns and other ranges. Their hand-tool work keeps local hikers and riders safely moving through these rugged landscapes.
