EWEB Modernizes Downtown Vaults, Shaving Traditional Costs by Two-Thirds (publicpower.org) — EWEB has quietly overhauled six aging underground power vaults serving downtown Eugene, using a new modular system that cuts traditional replacement costs by about two-thirds. The work lets crews keep cables energized during installation, reducing traffic disruption while boosting long-term reliability and safety for downtown homes and businesses.
   

2. Amtrak's new Airo passenger train arrives in Eugene for first time (registerguard.com) — New Amtrak Airo trains have just completed a test run into Eugene and are expected to start regular Cascades service between Eugene and Vancouver, B.C., in September. Locals turned out at the Eugene station to see the sleeker, more comfortable replacement for the aging 1970s-era fleet, and some residents are already planning to ride the first new departure from Eugene.
   

3. Flight diverts to Eugene after shutting down engine mid-flight (oregonlive.com) — An Alaska Airlines flight from Orange County to Seattle diverted to Eugene after pilots shut down one engine due to low oil indications, requesting an emergency landing at Eugene Airport. The 737 landed safely at Mahlon Sweet Field with no injuries, and passengers were later rebooked while maintenance crews inspected the aircraft in Eugene.
   

4. Eugene man dies after falling into Willamette River near Springfield (registerguard.com) — A 75-year-old Eugene man died after falling from a watercraft into the Willamette River near Clearwater Park and Landing in Springfield on July 20, marking the third death on that Lane County waterway this month. First responders pulled him from the river and rushed him to a hospital, where he later died, and the medical examiner is still investigating the exact cause.
   

5. Eugene police arrest woman accused of flooding apartment, breaking neighbor's window (kval.com) — Eugene police arrested a 25-year-old woman Friday morning after she allegedly flooded her Patterson Street apartment, broke a neighbor’s window, and later walked around the complex hitting doors with a pole. Officers initially couldn’t get her to leave the unit, but later took her into custody, and she was booked into Lane County Jail on multiple criminal mischief and related charges.
