1. Underground toxins found at J.H. Baxter site spark new cleanup (kezi.com) — Federal crews are back at the J.H. Baxter Superfund site in west Eugene after new underground contamination was discovered, launching a second cleanup expected to run into spring 2027. EPA testing found toxic wood-treatment chemicals still leaching into soil and stormwater, prompting more excavation, capping and stormwater controls, though officials say temporary measures mean there’s no current threat to nearby residents.
   

2. Eugene woman tried to torch tent with family inside, police say (registerguard.com) — Police say a 33-year-old Eugene woman was arrested after allegedly trying to ignite a tent with a mother and daughter inside near West Sixth Avenue late Thursday night. Surveillance video and a lighter reportedly linked her to melted holes in the tent’s fabric. She was booked into Lane County Jail on attempted first-degree arson, and her name is being withheld until arraignment.
   

3. Free and easy ways to increase attendance at campus events (uoregon.edu) — If you’re planning a talk, concert or exhibit at the University of Oregon, you’ve got several free ways to reach people in Eugene and Springfield. Organizers can use the UO events calendar, internal newsletters, social media, the Daily Emerald and local community calendars to boost turnout, with university communications and marketing staff available for more complex promotion needs.
   

4. Oregon university classified employees authorize strike, could hit picket line this month (opb.org) — Classified employees at the University of Oregon and six other public universities have overwhelmingly authorized a strike that could start Sept. 28, the first day of classes in Eugene. Union leaders say the current offer doesn’t match rising living costs in cities like Eugene, while universities tout their benefits package as they head into another bargaining session on Sept. 24.
   

5. Eugene man killed in semi-truck crash near Mount Hood (registerguard.com) — A 31-year-old Eugene truck driver, Dagoberto Moreno-Prada, died Monday night when his semi rolled on Highway 26 near Mount Hood and collided head-on with a Jeep, killing both drivers. The impact sent the freight container and Jeep through a guardrail, closing the highway for hours as investigators worked the scene and recovery crews cleared the wreckage.
