1. Eugene police, fire hold active shooter response drill at former PeaceHealth UD hospital (kval.com) — Emergency crews are running an intensive active-shooter training at the former PeaceHealth University District hospital in Eugene this week, bringing a heavy police and fire presence to the area. The exercise, continuing through Friday, April 24, is meant to streamline how Eugene Police and Eugene-Springfield Fire coordinate so medics can safely reach victims, and residents nearby should expect delays and lots of emergency vehicles.

2. Eugene Marathon boosts local charities, tourism across region (kezi.com) — Eugene is gearing up for a sold-out 2026 Eugene Marathon weekend that will bring more than 14,000 runners and a big tourism boost to town. Many participants are fundraising for local causes like the Boys & Girls Club of Emerald Valley, while Travel Lane County urges residents to warmly welcome visitors drawn by TrackTown USA and Hayward Field.

3. Pet of the Week: Amelia (kezi.com) — A playful two-year-old mixed-breed pup named Amelia is waiting for an active Eugene-area family through Greenhill Humane Society’s Foster-to-Adopt program. She’s already learning commands, loves toys and other dogs, and comes spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped. Locals can visit Greenhill on Green Hill Road daily to meet her or learn about other adoptable pets.

4. Springfield Council fills Beth Blackwell vacancy with '3rd choice' (registerguard.com) — A longtime Springfield resident who works for Eugene School District 4J has been appointed to fill a vacant Springfield City Council seat through at least 2026. Jill Cuadros, chosen as a compromise after divided support for two other candidates, says she’s concerned about Springfield’s proposed budget and payroll tax but isn’t yet committing to a position.
