Sanctuary March Tonight in Hillsboro

Washco Solidarity wants the city council to declare their city a solidarity city, that all residents of Hillsboro are protected.

Activists in Hillsboro plan to march to the city council meeting Tuesday night and demand the city pass a resolution declaring Hillsboro a "sanctuary city." The march, which is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. in Shute Park, will then head to the civic center.

The groups presented a draft resolution to the council in December. A similar one was adopted by Beaverton last month,

"The City of Hillsboro will have zero tolerance on racism, discrimination, and raids conducted by Immigration Customs Enforcement," the resolution reads. "We will NOT have any kind of cooperation between our Hillsboro Police Department and immigration Customs Enforcement, ICE.

"We will assure victims of racism, discrimination due to their immigration status, race, country of origin, gender, sexual orientation and their religious beliefs have full access to our City Services."

While refusing to cooperate with immigration officials would put Hillsboro at odds with an executive order that calls for withholding federal funds for sanctuary cities signed by President Trump, it would put the city in line with an executive order on the state level signed last week by Governor Brown.

Hillsboro's city council has debated the issue but not passed anything. In December, then-Mayor Jerry Willey said the city was committed to protecting its residents but refrained from saying the would be a "sanctuary" city.
