As Sixth Night of Protests Fill the Streets, No Arrests (Video)
More than 100 people have been arrested since the protests began.
Another nightfall in Portland, and another evening of protesters filling the streets and clashing with police. What started out as a candlelight vigil for a protester who was shot during a confrontation with a motorist Friday night quickly turned in another evening of tension.
Just after 8:30 Sunday evening, the situation reached the point where TriMet felt compelled to suspend some light rail service downtown. Portland Police announced they were working with the transit agency and the Oregon Department of Transportation to expedite traffic around the Moda Center where the Blazer game had just let out.
The protest had started peaceful. Several speakers addressed the crowd, urging people to be peaceful while not giving up on the urge to fight.
Newly elected City Councilwoman Chloe Eudaly was among the speakers.
"It's been a pretty weird week for me," she said, commenting on the fact she scored an upset victory over Councilman Steve Novick and Donald Trump was elected president.
She assured people that Mayor-elect Ted Wheeler is committed to maintaining Portland's status as a sanctuary city.
By 10:30 p.m. the march had died down and TriMet had restored service.
Meanwhile, Portland Police arrested so many people Saturday night that they needed a TriMet bus to transport them all to jail. Police said 71 people were arrested during the fifth night of protests since Trump had been elected.
The majority of those arrested were charged with failing to obey orders to get out of the streets and back onto the sidewalk.
Several times through the evening protesters threw burning road flares at police officers. Earlier in the evening police said they had seized a stockpile of bricks and rocks.
Things had started when several hundred gathered around 6:30 Saturday evening at Pioneer Courthouse Square before marching north.
"Who's ready to march?" one of the organizers yelled. "Let's march!"
It didn't take long before confrontations with officers began. Police reported people throwing projectiles at them near Southwest Broadway and Washington.
Officers have been telling protesters to get back on the sidewalk or they will be subject to arrest.
People are urged to avoid the area.
Police said they also used "diversionary bang" devices to allow for more arrests on Yamhill. They also announced that they discovered and removed a stockpile of bricks and rocks near Pioneer Courthouse Square.
Around 11 p.m. the police closed Pioneer Courthouse Square and a two-block radius in all directions for a police action.
The rioting even caught the attention of comedian Dave Chappelle who referred to it in his opening monologue on "Saturday Night Live."
"I've never seen this before," Chappelle said. "I watched a white riot in Portland, Oregon. on television. News said they did a million in damages. Every black person watching was like, 'amateurs.'"
Earlier Saturday, Portland Police announced that they have have arrested two people in connection with the shooting of a protester on the Morrison Bridge early Saturday morning. It was at the tail end of the fourth night of protests that had filled the streets of Portland.
The two arrested were 18-year-old Steffon Marquise Corothers, who was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on charge of attempted murder and unlawful use of a weapon, and 18-year-old Shamar Xavier Hunter, who was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on six counts of attempted murder and one count of unlawful use of a weapon.
Gregory McKelvey, whose group, Portland's Resistance , had organized the march, said the victim was a peaceful protester.
Some witnesses said that a person trying to drive across the bridge had a confrontation with some of the protesters who were blocking traffic. The driver told people to get off the bridge or else.
The driver then fired several shots, striking the man, before speeding off.
Portland Police say that early Saturday morning, an off-duty officer spotted the suspect car at Northeast 102 and Sandy and called for help. Officers were able to stop the car.
Four people were detained and a gun was seized.
Meanwhile, Portland Police announced they had arrested 17 people during the protests Friday night.
"We are done with criminal activity in this city," Police Chief Michael Marshman said at an afternoon press conference where the arrests were announced.
Also on Saturday morning, McKelvey's group posted on Facebook that after four straight days of marches they have nothing planned for Saturday because "our community needs time to heal."
They also stressed that they are not the only group organizing protests and they advocate non-violence not vandalism and destruction.
The group says they will have a candlelight vigil on Sunday for the man who was shot.
"Please spread love not hate," the wrote.
Until the shooting the protests - while once again filling the streets and showing little regard for what police had to say - had been without the riot and violence from Thursday night.
There had been clashes between marchers and police - marchers threw bottles and other projectiles at officers who eventually responded with tear gas and other non-lethal devices.
Marchers had started at City Hall, worked their way east and then back to downtown, shutting off traffic and blocking bridges as they went.
More than once police deployed tear gas, flash bang grenades, and what they refer to as less lethal munitions.
Earlier in the day Mayor Charlie Hales and Chief of Police Michael Marshman appealed for calm. On Thursday night, scores of rioters marched largely untouched for several hours causing damage to property estimated at more than $1 million.
"Don't be afraid," Hales said. "Don't hide at home."
The two met with reporters hours after Marshman had said that the mayor had directed him to take a light approach in dealing with protesters — even when they were marching onto freeways and bridges, blocking traffic.
That approach seemed to backfire when a group of more than 100 self-described anarchists broke off from the main group of more than 4,000 marchers upset with the election of Donald Trump and rampaged through town on both sides of the river.
It was the third night of protests and the first one to be violent.
Dozens of businesses had their windows smashed, more than one dozen cars were damaged, drivers were attacked, as were reporters who were trying to report on the incidents.
Portland Police say that at least 26 were arrested over the course of the evening.
Marshman asked protesters to consider taking Friday off, but if they do feel the need to come out to stay in one place.
March organizers say they do plan a rally on Friday at 5 p.m. at City Hall.
Some of the greatest damage happened at Broadway Toyota where 19 cars were smashed. Damage there alone is estimated at $250,000.
Thursday evening had started off peacefully — the third night of protests to register their displeasure with Trump's election on Tuesday. Close to 4,000 people had gathered by Pioneer Courthouse Square.
They started marching through downtown, and then a group of around 125 people, many of them covering their faces with masks, started blocking traffic and vandalizing store windows.
These actions led to the incident being labeled "a riot" by Portland Police due to what they said was criminal and dangerous behavior.
"Due to extensive criminal and dangerous behavior, protest is now considered a riot," the bureau said in a statement. "Crowd has been advised."
For hours people had waited for word from Hales, but the first public comment he made was not until more than 12 hours after the riot when he released a statement.
"I'm saddened by the destruction of our public spaces and local businesses caused by rioters," he said. "Although the majority of over 4,000 protesters last night were peaceful and followed Portland Police safety instructions, anarchists shut down these voices by spreading violence and fear.
"Riots and violence in our streets are completely unacceptable. I hope that all Portlanders will help our local small businesses recover."
Hales also thanked the Police Bureau. His statement followed a comment by the man who will succeed him, Ted Wheeler, by about 30 minutes.
"People are hurting," Wheeler said. "The best response to pain is healing. People are scared. The best response to fear is peace. Portland is an example to the nation, indeed the world. Let's make that example an unequivocally positive one. We can all help.
"Some people are volunteering to clean up. Others are pledging to support the local businesses that were impacted."
The turn to violence and vandalism led march organizer Gregory McKelvey to tell Patch that he had nothing to do with that sort of activity.
"I don't want to be involved in destruction and vandalism," he told Patch.
McKelvey, who calls his new group Portland's Resistance, said that the people he organized were not responsible for the violence and vandalism.
"These are different people," he told Patch. "They are not involved with us, having nothing to do with us. They were going to be there doing their own thing. They don't care about anyone or what we are protesting."
McKelvey told Patch that he hopes people involved in the anti-Trump movement don't get involved with the vandalism.
"This is not who we are," he said. "We are about love. What they are doing is just as bad as Trump, spreading hate and violence."
McKelvey's group has set up a GoFundMe page to help raise money for the businesses who were damaged during the riot.
My mid-afternoon on Friday, they had already received $26,708 in contributions.
