- Six masked vandals smashed up a coffee shop about 3 a.m. Wednesday in apparent retaliation for a planned “Coffee with a Cop” event that had drawn angry online comments, according to the proprietor, Loretta Guzman, who said police officials had asked her to host a two-hour event for community members interested in talking to officers. But when the 52-year-old posted the event on social media with the hashtags “#positiveoutreach” and “#weliveforthefuture,” her page was flooded with dozens of angry messages. (OregonLive)
- In an effort to shorten 911 wait times, Portland City Council will adopt a pilot project that provides double pay for people who work overtime through the end of the fiscal year. They're hoping this will allow more people to work overtime and allow some workers to train new hires. City Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty voted against it because she thought it would hurt the city’s budget down the road. The city said this program will not have an additional financial impact because unused money from open positions will fund the extra payments. (KATU)
- Many of us would like to be remembered after we die, but this may not be easy for a transgender person. Portland area health officials have found that "death certificates misgendered more than half of transgender or nonbinary people who died in the decade ending last year." “As a privileged, white, cis female, seeing this was devastating,” Washington County epidemiologist Kimberly Repp said in an interview. (OregonLive)
- Wednesday was a bad day to be at Lloyd Center Mall, as it was the scene of multiple crimes. "A witness saw one person bleeding, who said they had been shot. That witness said another person ran off carrying a gun. There are also three crashed cars in the area — two at the intersection of NE Grand and Weidler and a third at NE Grand and Halsey." An officer on scene told a bystander that the condition of the person who was shot is currently unknown. The Portland Police Bureau is the agency overseeing the investigation. (OPB)
- The Portland restaurant scene has lost one of its own. Celebrated Portland chef Sarah Pliner, 50, was killed by a truck while biking through the intersection of Southeast Powell Boulevard and 26th Avenue yesterday, the Portland Police Bureau said. "Pliner was the founder of Aviary, a restaurant on Northeast Alberta Street that WW named Restaurant of the Year in 2012. Aviary closed in 2020 at the height of the pandemic." (Willamette Week)

- Portlandia arrived in downtown Portland 37 years ago. No, not the amusing television show starring Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein, but, rather, the statue meant to be the symbol of Portland. Standing nearly 35 feet tall and weighing 5,900 kg, it was installed on the Portland Building on October 6, 1985. Here's footage of the statue as it first came into the city. (YouTube)
