Here are the top stories today in Portland:
- An arrest has been made in the stabbing death of a man in the Hollywood neighborhood yesterday morning. "Officers responded to a call in Northeast Portland, where police said they found an injured man and woman. Although first aid was administered upon arrival, the man died at the scene. PPB said the hospitalized woman’s injuries are non-life-threatening." "James Hera, 38, was arrested and charged with murder in the second degree, assault in the first degree and unlawful use of a weapon." (KOIN.com)
- Mayor Ted Wheeler announced some big plans to address homelessness last week, including a ban on unsanctioned camping and the establishment of several large, sanctioned camping areas. Several city and county officials have responded to these plans. Jo Ann Hardesty, predictably, questioned some of the most basic aspects of the plan, while her opponent, Gonzalez, gave a vaguely optimistic answer. County Commissioner Jessica Vega Pederson said, "I met with Mayor Wheeler last Wednesday about his proposal, but there were few details at the time and what has been subsequently released was different in many ways from what we discussed." (KATU)
- While Lillard may be optimistic about the upcoming NBA season, few others are. Some sports reporters don't believe that the Blazers will even make it to the playoffs. "FanDuel Sportsbook lists the Warriors as the pick to come out of the West, by the slimmest of margins over the Clippers with the Suns not far behind." Here's a rundown of predictions about the Western Conference for the upcoming season: (KGW)
- As election day looms, the candidates in the running are becoming more vocal about their plans should they find themselves in office. The hottest issue on Oregon voters' minds? Homelessness. "New polling by DHM Research for The Oregonian shows 9 in 10 voters statewide see homelessness as 'a very big problem.'" All three gubernatorial candidates say that, should they be elected, "they would declare a homelessness state of emergency." Here is a video of their full response: (Willamette Week)
- As I mentioned last week, Biden was in town to stump for Tina Kotek and the Democratic party in general. He spoke to a crowd of roughly 400 at the East Portland Community Center. "He championed his Inflation Reduction Act, which goes into effect in January" and was "joined by Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley and Representative Suzanne Bonamici." Biden struck a mainly optimistic note saying, “I’m a bubble up guy. When the middle class does well, the working-class people have a way up, and the wealthy do just fine, and by the way, the middle class built this country and unions built the middle class.” (KGW)

- I'm pretty interested in local politics, but let's get back to basics; if you're not registered to vote, today is the deadline! I realize that if you're not registered to vote by now, you're probably not interested, and that's fine. But I am a strong believer in one's civic duty, so even if you feel your vote doesn't count (and it does), Oregon has made voting so convenient, why not just play along. I know, not the best pitch, but I'm still hoping you'll vote just for the heck of it. (Multnomah County)
- Portland Art Museum: "Verified 🎂 Happy birthday to American Impressionist Childe Hassam (1859–1935) born #OnThisDay. Influenced by French Impressionists like Claude Monet (on view nearby), Hassam found his native New England to be a source of constant inspiration for his paintings." (Portland Art Museum via Instagram)
- Portland Gov: "Call PDX 311 when you have a question or need a service, and we’ll get you the right answer or connection quickly. Because connecting to your government should be easy." (Portland Gov via Instagram)
