Springfield School District's interim superintendent hopes to build trust, common ground in new role (klcc.org) — Springfield Public Schools’ new interim superintendent, Shawn Stover, is trying to rebuild trust after a year of budget cuts and leadership turmoil. He says his first priorities are listening, earning confidence from the board and community, and refocusing adults on supporting teachers and student success in Springfield classrooms.
   

2. Former inmate sues state for $1.5 million over untreated ankle injury (thelundreport.org) — A Springfield resident and former inmate is suing the state for more than $1.5 million, alleging prison staff failed to properly diagnose and treat a severely dislocated ankle. After his release, he underwent major reconstructive surgery at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield and says he still lives with significant pain tied to the earlier lack of care.
   

3. Summer Sports Zone July 23 (chronicle1909.com) — Springfield-area baseball fans can follow several local storylines, from Thurston grads leading the Eugene Challengers to Springfield Drifters players fueling recent wins. The roundup also highlights standout speedster Aiden Gebhard and celebrates former Thurston star Maddox Molony being drafted by the Detroit Tigers, extending Springfield’s baseball footprint well beyond Lane County.
   

4. Eugene man dies after falling into Willamette River near Springfield (registerguard.com) — A 75-year-old Eugene man died July 20 after falling from a watercraft into the Willamette River near Clearwater Park and Landing in Springfield, marking the third death on Lane County waterways this month. First responders pulled him from the river and took him to a hospital, where he later died, prompting renewed attention to river safety in the Springfield area.
   

5. Lane County man sentenced Friday after Springfield abuse trial over 7-year-old boy (nbc16.com) — A Lane County man has been sentenced to nearly 46 years in prison after a jury convicted him of dozens of child abuse charges involving a 7-year-old boy in Springfield. Prosecutors say Springfield police discovered the malnourished child in 2024, and home surveillance video helped secure convictions for assaults and unlawful Taser use against both parents.
