Abington HS Wins 2 U.S. Chess Federation National Titles

ABINGTON, PA — Abington Senior High School came home from the recent national chess championship with some serious hardware.

The chess team won two first-place victories at the United States Chess Federation’s High School Nationals, which took place last weekend out in Schaumburg, Illinoise.

Senior Yonatan Wiese-Namir defeated a field of 400 competitiors to win the individual national title.

Wiese-Namir combined with sophomores Albert Hatton, Nathaniel O, and Ethan Weilheimer to win the team competition, as well, earning a top score of 21.5. They defeated 67 other teams from around the country.

In addition, the u1600 team of seniors Carter Stephens (25th overall), Brecon Hession, and Tim Hetzel, along with junior Zach Hammad, placed 7th out of 49.
