Elkins Park Student-Athlete Wins Prestigious Crew Award

Congratulations to local resident and student-athlete Maria Perry.

ELKINS PARK, PA — An Elkins Park resident and student-athlete at Penn Charter High School is the recipient of a prestigious crew award.

Maria Perry, a senior, was honored with the 2017-18 John Izzard Award, which recognizes a student-athlete from within the Philadelphia Scholastic Rowing Association every year for achievement and dedication to service.

“I am incredibly proud of Maria’s accomplishment,” said head crew coach Katherine Farrell, who nominated Perry for the honor. “Not only is this a huge statement as an individual, but it also reflects Penn Charter crew as a whole. As coaches and administrators, we strive to create a team culture where the idea of a well-rounded, successful individual is the expectation. It brings me great personal pride to have our program represented in this way.”

Perry received a plaque last month during a ceremony at the Castle Ringstetten on Boathouse Row, and will receive a personal trophy next March at the Schuykill Navy Annual Awards Banquet, Penn Charter said.

The John Izzard Award honors former Undine captain, vice president, educator, and Philadelphia YMCA physical and aquatics director John Izzard Junior.
