The incident required a herculean reponse from emergency workers, who battled treacherous road conditions amid a snow squall to reach the scene.

"This was an awful, tragic event that claimed the lives of six people," the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency said Monday. "The coordination among county, local, and state agencies and organizations resulted in all-hands-on-deck emergency response, with everyone working together to help as many people as possible, as quickly as possible."

The crash occurred at 10:36 a.m. on Monday, March 28, in the northbound lanes between exits 116 and 119. The scene of the accident was about halfway between Harrisburg and Scranton.

Video footage taken from the scene shows the pileup starting small, with a few trucks in a line and a few cars pulled off to the side of the road. As a passenger in one of the cars gets out, another vehicle smashes into his car at a high rate of speed, narrowly missing him. Seconds later another truck plows into the line of trucks. Things spiral from there.

The road was shut down in both directions for miles from the time of the crash until the early morning hours Wednesday, some 40 hours later. First responders had to hike in, as the road became impassable due to the snow. Fire burned for hours in several of the vehicles, including tractor-trailers.

Some of the injured were able to walk away from the scene themselves. They were taken to four different area hospitals by ambulances.

Hours of construction work were needed on the road once it was finally cleared, police said.
