MARYLAND — State police have released body camera footage of a June crash involving Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman, who authorities previously said was speeding when he rear-ended another vehicle on Interstate 70 in Maryland.

The footage, obtained by The Washington Post under Maryland’s Public Information Act, showed police officers discussing the crash and asking the Democratic senator questions. The footage also showed the extensive damage to Fetterman’s black Chevrolet Traverse and the back of a red Chevrolet sedan.

"The black car is, it’s actually, I think the senator of Pennsylvania — the real big, tall guy. ... He just ran into that red car," a first responder says in the video.

The same officer later recounts a witness statement, saying, "He was flying, and she wanted to merge, and he just smashed her."

Authorities previously said Fetterman was speeding and at fault for the crash that happened the morning of June 9 near Hagerstown.

The incident occurred in the westbound lanes of I-70 approaching Interstate 68.

Fetterman drove past a witness, who was driving the posted speed limit of 70 miles per hour, at a "high rate of speed," according to state police.

As Fetterman, who was traveling with his wife, approached the exit to I-68, he rear-ended another vehicle, police said.

Fetterman, his wife, and the driver of the other vehicle were all taken to the nearby War Memorial Hospital after the crash. Both vehicles sustained significant damage and were towed from the scene.

No criminal charges or citations have been filed, but the investigation is ongoing.

During his initial public response to the accident, Fetterman did not acknowledge that he was at fault.

"Not the best way to spend our 16th wedding anniversary but we’re doing well and happy to be back home in Braddock with the family," Fetterman shared on his social media accounts.

Fetterman’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Post on Thursday afternoon, but last month said he would drive more slowly in the future.

“This was an unfortunate accident on Sunday, and I’m relieved and grateful that there were no serious injuries,” he said in a statement to the Post. “I’ve been driving for almost 40 years, and I’ve gotten a small handful of tickets. When I sped, I was held accountable. I need to do better and do it slower — and I will.”
