New PA Bill Would Allow 'Doorless Driving' For Certain Vehicles

Pennsylvania is the only state in the nation that makes driving these vehicles without doors illegal, lawmakers said.

HARRISBURG, PA — Drivers of Jeeps and Broncos could soon be allowed to drive without doors on their vehicles in Pennsylvania, if a forthcoming piece of proposed legislation is advanced into law.

It is currently illegal to drive without doors in Pennsylvania, unless off-roading. Pennsylvania is the only state in the nation that makes driving Jeeps and Broncos without doors illegal, lawmakers said.

"One of my constituents who is part of the Jeep community brought this to my attention, and asked if something can be done so he and others in Pennsylvania can enjoy the same freedoms that every other state provides," State Sen. Devlin J. Robinson said in a co-sponsorship memorandum.

Robinson said the legislation would adhere closely to "logistical and safety standards." Those include requiring side view mirrors remain attached once doors are removed, and keeping in place other limitations for the protection of children.

The bill would only apply to vehicles that had factory removable doors.
