Ambler Woman Killed Grandmother With Kitchen Knife, Bat: DA

AMBLER, PA -- A 30-year-old woman has been arrested for killing her grandmother with a kitchen knife and baseball bat inside her Ambler home, the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office announced.

Authorities said that Nicole Cadwalader, 30, believed her grandmother, 68-year-old Sharon Burke, was a "wretched, evil, woman," according to the affidavit of probable cause. However, specifics on what may have led to Cadwalader's actions were not provided.

Police said that early in the morning on Monday, Cadwalader used the kitchen knife to slit her grandmother's throat inside her home on the 100 block of South Chestnut Street. She then repeatedly beat her over the head with a baseball bat and a kitchen pan, authorities said.

Cadwalader, thinking her grandmother dead, left the scene and walked to a friend's house, authorities said. When she returned, she found her grandmother had moved from the kitchen to her bedroom, indicating she had survived a short while longer. Cadwalader then walked to the Ambler Police Station where she told officers what she had done, according to the affidavit of probable cause.

Cadwalader was remanded to Montgomery County Correctional Facility. Bail was not given, as is the rule for first-degree murder charges.

A preliminary hearing is set for June 14.
