Donate Your Old Luggage to Do Good in Our Community

Trade in your old luggage a AAA Mid-Atlantic and you'll receive a voucher to trade-up to new luggage.

Think the wheels on your old suitcase have rolled their last miles? Think again.

Load that luggage with clothes, shoes and household items, and deliver it to a participating Goodwill store in the Greater Philadelphia area, and aside from the “do good” feeling you’ll get from donating, you’ll also receive a discount voucher for new luggage at participating AAA Mid-Atlantic stores.

During the Third Annual Trade-In/Trade-Up Luggage Program, Goodwill and AAA Mid-Atlantic are teaming up to collect gently-used luggage, clothing, shoes and household items for Goodwill stores, which use the sale of those goods to fund job training and career services for people with disabilities for competitive employment.

“Put quite simply, donations equal jobs,” said Goodwill President and CEO Mark B. Boyd in a press release.

This program was inspired by the luggage weight restrictions being introduced on airlines in 2009, said AAA spokesperson Jenny M. Robinson.

“Many people had luggage sitting in their attics, basements and closets that were just too heavy,” Robinson said. “Instead of people leaving that luggage in storage, why not have it benefit the community?”

Robinson explained that AAA Mid-Atlantic’s merchandise product manage contacted the local Goodwill chapter to organize the Trade-In/Trade-Up program.

In its second years, more than 1,000 vouchers were redeemed.

For each piece of luggage dropped off through April 14, donors, AAA members and non-members alike, will receive a coupon good for 40 percent off a piece of Antler Luggage, or $25 off a $65 or more purchase of other brands of luggage at AAA Mid-Atlantic store locations. The discount vouchers must be used by April 30.

Robinson said there is no restriction to how much luggage you can donate, or how many vouchers you can redeem. However, each voucher must be used to purchase one piece of luggage.

“If you donate 10 pieces of luggage, you will get 10 vouchers to be used on 10 new pieces of luggage,” Robinson said.

No suitcase? No problem. Drop off travel gear, like clothing, sneakers and other items, and receive a voucher for $5 off a purchase of $25 on travel essentials.
