Spots Filling Fast for Montgomery County Overnight Camp

Each year Camp Rainbow Inc. hosts hundreds of smiling faces as Montgomery County youth swim, play sports, make crafts and build new friendships during week-long overnight camping experiences.

Executive Director Tom Johnson wants to cast the net wider for 2016, the camp’s 65th year. Johnson, who also serves as vice president of the Camp Rainbow Inc. board of directors, would like to see 500 to 700 kids ages 7 to 16 register for the seven week-long camping sessions, which begin on June 26 and continue through Aug. 12. (Each week is designated for a particular age group).

“We just give them a great time,” Johnson said of what kids can expect this year. “Every time I run into a camper that went there 10 years ago or 20 years ago they exclaim about what a great time they had.”

Johnson said he was thrilled that the board was able to extend the camping season to seven weeks – up from six weeks in recent years.

He emphasized the camp’s future in the community for years to come.

Since 1951 the overnight camp has opened its doors to deserving Montgomery County children, subsidizing most of the $267 weekly expense per camper as part of Camp Rainbow’s $160,000 annual operating budget.

In the months leading up to camp opening, Johnson said Camp Rainbow Inc. volunteers, as well as Montgomery County representatives have contributed hundreds of hours in man hours on maintenance of the dining room floors, electrical, lighting, roof repairs and installing new shower valves.

“We’re ready,” Johnson said. “All that’s missing are our campers.”
