Whole Food Rooftop Lunch Truck Opens Friday

On Friday, April 15, Whole Foods in Plymouth Meeting will open its new rooftop “Blue Route Taco” truck.

The rooftop open-air café emulates the lunch and snack trucks that have become popular at places like UPenn, but puts a Whole Foods twist on it.

Chris Rollo, Prepared Food Team Leader for the Plymouth Meeting Whole Foods, said the team wanted to make natural foods fun to eat. With the rise in popularity of street food, the team knew they wanted to do something that was fun and went with the popular culinary craze.

According to Rollo, the tacos are “darn authentic," similar to those of an LA lunch truck or of the country of their origin.

Rollo is a former resident of Orange County, CA and said this is what they ate between shifts at work.

“It’s my favorite food,” he said.

Rollo added that all of the meat and vegetables used in the tacos served at the rooftop café are local, and the tortillas are made in a small, family shop in downtown Norristown.

“Keeping it local was important,” said Rollo.

The “Blue Route Taco” truck serves five different taco varieties, including carne asada, pork carnitas, chicken, grilled vegetables and a fish taco. The truck will also have a selection of beer, soda and tea available.

While all of the tacos are authentic, according to Rollo, none of them are overly spicy, making them more welcoming to everyone’s taste.

All of the tacos' ingredients can also be purchased in the store to make them at home.

The rooftop taco truck will be open Monday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., weather permitting. Rollo said the truck will be open for three seasons—spring, summer and fall—with football specials already in the works.

Opening day is April 15, beginning at noon, with a five-piece Latin jazz band, maraca painting for children and giveaways throughout the day.

Rollo said to watch out for information about an upcoming Cinco de Mayo celebration that will be held on the rooftop café.

The rooftop taco truck café is a one-of-a-kind experience, with nothing else like it on the East Coast, or even this side of the U.S., according to Rollo.

The “Blue Route Taco” Truck is a real truck; however, there is no engine or transmission in it anymore. It was brought up to the roof of Whole Foods via crane one morning.

“It’s going to be a real hit,” Rollo said.
