The investigation began when a Montgomery County Detective was tipped off in October 2017 by the Pennsylvania Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) task force to a computer in Lower Merion Township allegedly being used to upload images of young girls engaging in sex acts with adults.

Authorities tracked the computer to Brean's address and executed a search warrant at his home in November 2017.

During the search, Delaware County's K9 Charlie – who is trained to detect small electronic devices such as flash drives – found two flash drives that were later discovered to have at least 25 images of children 11 to 15 years old engaged in sex acts and in sexual situations.

A MacBook computer was also seized and that the computer had at least five additional images showing child pornography.
