Islam, Modernity, and the Public Sphere: A Roundtable Monday, April 4, 2011 / Chase Auditorium / 4:30 pm

Sadia Abbas, a scholar of postcolonial studies at Rutgers.  Her work focuses on postcolonial literature and theory.  She is currently working on a book entitled At Freedom's Limit: Islam and the Postcolonial Predicament.

Cemil Aydin, historian and the program director of the Ali Vural Ak Center for Global Islamic Studies at George Mason University. He is the author of Politics of Anti-Westernism in Asia: Visions of World Order in Pan-Islamic and Pan-Asian Thought. His current research focuses on the intellectual history of the idea of the Muslim World.

Juliane Hammer, scholar of Islamic Studies at George Mason University. She specializes in the study of Muslims in the U.S., contemporary Muslim thought, women and gender in Islam and Sufism. She is the author of Palestinians in Exile: Diaspora and the Search for a Homeland. Her current research examines the discourses surrounding the women-led Friday prayer in New York in 2005.
