Police said this is called "pump switching."
While the pumps are still active, suspects will pump gas for other drivers at the gas stations, then ask for the cash.
The suspects keep the cash and leave the stations before police show up.
Most victims do not realize this crime has occurred for days or even weeks after the incident, police said.
Police said anyone who sees this activity should stay in a safe location and call 911 so police can determine if a crime occurred.
Drivers should make sure to always hang up your own gas nozzle or select "end transaction" on the pump's keypad.
Police also encouraged drivers to print a receipt at the pump or obtain one from the office to as proof of purchase.
