LMSD Hosting Service Event To Honor Martin Luther King Jr

Lower Merion Schools are hosting the event which will feature a number of hands-on projects for volunteers of all ages.

LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP, PA – The Lower Merion School District is once again hosting a community event to honor the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Students from the ten schools in the district and members of the community are invited to take part in an afternoon of service in honor of King from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 18 at the Lower Merion High School cafeteria.

Student organizations and the Home & School Associations will sponsor a number of hands-on projects for volunteers of all ages. Members of the Welsh Valley Middle School Jazz Band will provide entertainment. The League of Women Voters will be on hold a voter registration drive.

One student from each of the district’s secondary schools will be honored for their exemplary volunteer work throughout the year.

The following items are being collected for the projects and may be brought to the cafeteria for
the event:

  • school supplies;
  • books;
  • T-shirts;
  • shoes;
  • and children’s clothing.

The projects include creating Valentines for Veterans, no-sew blankets for the interventional radiology department at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, grab-and-go snack bags for the Ronald McDonald House, Dream Flags and dog toys.

Volunteers will also write letters to children at CHOP and to those receiving food from Philabundance. Additional projects will benefit Broad Street Ministries, buildOn and schools in Senegal and Gambia.

Lower Merion High School is located at 315 E. Montgomery Ave. in Ardmore.
