Longtime Main Line Police Superintendent Retiring

LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP, PA — March 2024 will mark the end of an era, as longtime Lower Merion Police Superintendent Michael McGrath plans to retire then.

McGrath said his last day as police superintendent will be March 29, 2024.

Appointed superintendent 15 years ago, McGrath has been with the department for 45 years.

"As to my thoughts on retirement, being a long-term thinker and planner, it is something my wife and I have been mapping out for some time, years actually," he said in an email to Patch. "Lower Merion is a great community and we have been fortunate enough to attract some of the best of the best to the department before and during my tenure as superintendent."

McGrath said he is looking forward to the next chapter of his life and spending more time with his family.

"It has been an honor and privilege to work with so many incredible people and professionals over my years at the police department," he said. "I will still be involved in the law enforcement community with the Montgomery County Chiefs Association and various training and consulting opportunities for the foreseeable future."

According to McGrath, the superintendent selection process has changed significantly since his appointment in 2008.

With that in mind, Lower Merion Township officials are starting the search process for a new superintendent now, McGrath said.
