LOWER MERION, PA — The principal of Lower Merion High School was killed in a car crash early Saturday morning.

Sean Hughes, 51, was driving his 13-year-old son Nolan to a soccer game at around 7:30 a.m. when he collided with another vehicle in Winslow Township, New Jersey, police said. Nolan, and individuals in the other vehicle, were treated for non life-threatening injuries.

Hughes had served the district as principal for more than 14 years.

Hughes was greeted by students in the halls everywhere he went, and was known for encouraging student engagement and maintaining countless personal relationships.

"He encouraged student voice at every turn, the door to his office was always open, and I know that many will carry his message of “character counts” throughout their lives," Mumin added. "It is not an understatement to say his impact on his students is immeasurable."

In addition to serving as principal, Hughes was also the president of the Central Athletic League.

The district is making resources available for children and parents online.

Hughes is survived by his children Nolan, Jack, and Kate, as well as his wife, Kristi.
