Lower Merion Police Hosting Free 'Gun Turn-In' Events

Stop by the Lower Merion Police Department Wednesday, Sept. 18 or Saturday, Sept. 21 to turn in ant unwanted firearms.

LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP, PA — The Montgomery County District Attorney's Office will be sponsoring several free gun turn-in events around the county, including Lower Merion, this month to help local residents dispose of unwanted guns.

Lower Merion Police are joining seven other county departments for take back events on Wednesday, Sept. 18 and Saturday, Sept. 21.

Police will be collecting guns from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 19 and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lower Merion Police Department, 71 Lancaster Ave. in Ardmore.

The 2018 "Operation Safe Homes" event collected 107 unwanted firearms from around the county.

"Let me be very clear: we are not taking guns away from anyone," District Attorney Kevin Steele said in a statement. "This is a community service to any gun-owning resident who has decided to get guns out of their house and permanently off the street."

Once guns are collected, they will be destroyed.

Other locations for the event include police departments in Abington, Jenkintown, Lansdale, Lower Salford, Pottstown, Upper Merion, and Whitpain.
