Lower Merion Schools Top $50K In Donations To Cancer Group

With 14 years in the books, the Maroon Madness benefit event has raised more than $50,000 for Coaches vs. Cancer and cancer research.

ARDMORE, PA – The 14th Annual Maroon Madness benefit event at Lower Merion High School was a major success, bringing hundreds of community members together in support of Coaches vs. Cancer.

Nearly 1,000 people came out to support this year's event, which serves as the official start to Lower Merion's winter athletic season and the school's annual Coaches vs. Cancer Drive.

Over the past 8 years, the Lower Merion community has raised well over $50,000 to benefit cancer research.

Program highlights from this year's event included the introduction of the boys and girls teams, an intra-squad scrimmage, student dances, on-court fan contests, musical entertainment and raffles for Nike gear and autographed merchandise.

St. Joseph's University head men's basketball coach Phil Martelli was on hand to address the crowd as he reinforced the importance and impact of the funds raised by the LMHS community in the fight against cancer.

"Lower Merion sets the standard for Coaches vs. Cancer," Martelli tweeted about the event.

The Aces also welcomed back Darryl Reynolds (Lower Merion Class of 2012), a member of the 2016 National Champion Villanova Wildcats, for an LM-themed live taping of his new show "Stay Tuned with D. Rey" as he interviewed head coaches Gregg Downer and Mo Boykins along with players from each team.

After the remarks and addresses, the Aces took the hardwood for the scrimmage, which was interspersed with student performances and on-court contests for prizes.
