The prestigious Philadelphia International Music Festival (PIMF) awarded over $20,000 USD in scholarships and performance opportunities this past year to young musicians who took top spots in PIMF’s Concerto Competitions, online and at its summer festivals.

Noëlle Streuber-Eden, 17, of Wynnewood, PA, won Honorable Mention in the Ages 16-19 Division in PIMF’s latest Virtual Concerto Competition, which attracted entries from all over the world. She is awarded automatic acceptance to the program of her choice in PIMF’s intensive classical music training program featuring members of The Philadelphia Orchestra.

Noëlle’s performance of the first movement, Moderato nobile, of Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s cinematic Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35 impressed the judges.

“It is a piece that speaks to me both musically and personally,” the rising senior at Harriton High School explained. “I love its combination of elegance, lyricism, and emotional depth, as well as the way Korngold creates a sense of storytelling through the violin.

“Korngold’s life story also resonates with me. As an Austrian composer who built a new life in America, he experienced being part of multiple cultures and musical worlds. His ability to bring together his European classical heritage with new American influences reminds me of my own experience as a second-generation immigrant navigating different cultural identities. I hope listeners hear not only the beauty and drama of the music, but also the sense of connection, resilience, and discovery that are part of Korngold’s story and my own.”

A gifted musician, Noëlle discovered the violin 14 years ago and played double bass in elementary school and trumpet in middle school before focusing on the violin. She is the rotating Concertmaster and soloist of Temple University’s Center for Gifted Young Musicians Youth Chamber Orchestra and a member of the Myer Schwartz Trio through Settlement Music School’s Advanced Study Program. She studies with Guillaume Combet.

“Music is one of the most important parts of my life,” she said. “It is a way for me to express ideas and emotions that are sometimes difficult to put into words. I love both performing as a soloist and collaborating with other musicians because every musical partnership creates something unique. Music has also introduced me to many wonderful friends, mentors, and communities. My goal is to continue developing as a violinist and musician at the highest level.”
