Cabin Fever?

If you're stuck at home during this spate of bad weather (hopefully with power), you might be doing what I'm doing- staring at the walls and thinking about new paint, a new wood stove, even a new kitchen! Cabin fever, for better or for worse, gives us a long, uninterrupted look at our homes, mostly from the inside out. As long as you don't have to think about damage repair from falling branches or burst pipes, take this opportunity to make some positive changes.

If you're thinking big, check out a new web darling of the designer community, Houzz. Houzz.com has an endless gallery of design ideas for all areas of your home, from landscaping and additions to shelving and even utensil storage. It asks you to register as a member, which can seem annoying but I've enjoyed their weekly email features- they're not overbearing.

If you want to stick to small ideas and a small budget, use your creativity. One day after a good long look at our dining room, I realized that by moving some furniture pieces that seemed glued to the floor (but weren't), we could really open the space. Re-arranging furniture can feel like a renovation, and only requires a few strong backs.

Similarly, getting rid of the extra stuff clogging up your living space can really improve the look and feel of your home. Obviously, you want to declutter if you're planning on selling your home, but what about enjoying the space you live in? Most of us feel liberated when we clear out the things we don't really need.

Finally, explore paint colors for brightening up some bland rooms. And if you're like me, get busy with the seed catalogs and garden plans. Thinking about your spring planting mid-winter is a classic pick-me-up.

Stay warm everyone!
